Is wearing Sunscreen really Important? Some of my Favorites!

Hi Everyone! Let me start of by saying that I am a huge believer in wearing Sunscreen everyday no matter what time of the year it is, Summer, Winter, Cloudy or Rain!! Over exposure to the Sun can be very damaging to the skin. Hey sun is not our enemy, remember that dose of Vitamin D we need everyday from the sun??? BUT SUNLIGHT plays a major role in prematurely aging our skin, much of skin damage is due to sun exposure. Long-term UV exposure can also lead to pigmentation, photo aging, reduced skin elasticity and wrinkles.

The ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate into the skin. There, they damage the elastic fibers that keep skin firm, allowing wrinkles to develop. Sunlight is also responsible for age spots on sun-exposed areas. The amount of wrinkles that develop, and how prominent they are, are largely dependent on a person’s lifetime sun exposure.

I remember when I was young I spent a lot of time being outdoors, going out Skiing, participating in adventure treks, going out to fun camps but I had absolutely no awareness about SPF and Sunscreens back then as it was not that common to wear sunscreens. So I would either end up with tanned burnt skin on my face or a crusty nose. While I can’t go back in time and put sunscreen on my carefree 13-year-old self, I can stop any further damage that’s happening now, it’s never too late to start to protect your skin from the sun. So now, I am very conscious about it & make it a point to educate my kids when they are young the importance of wearing sunscreen.

Sun emits two types of Ultra Violet Rays, UVA & UVB, what are they??
UVA– These are longer rays that go much deeper into the skin, these rays breaks the underlying dermis that has collagen & elastin which keep the skin supple and this kind of sun damage happens over a longer period of time so you don’t notice immediately. This can cause pigmentation, aging and increase the risk of Skin Cancer. Even on a cloudy day UVA Rays will penetrate the skin.
UVB– These are the shorter burning rays that get absorbed by the top layer of the skin (Epidermis) which turns the skin red or pink if exposed to for a longer period. Causes Sun burns and Tanning of the skin.

What is SPF (Sun Protection Factor)?
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor,” which is the ability for a sunscreen to block UVB rays. It is the approximate amount of time to gauge how much time you can remain in the sun without getting burned. SPF only accounts for protection against UVB rays and not UVA rays. Exposure to both UVA/UVB can cause Cancer.

Types of Sunscreens
Chemical Sunscreens-
This type of Sunscreen will absorb the Sun rays. (Heloplex, oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate )
Physical Sunscreens– Will act like a shield blocks the Sun rays. (Titanium Oxide, Zinc Oxide).
Physical Sunscreens can leave a white cast after applying. But are perfect and recommended for sensitive skin.

When it comes to choosing the perfect Sunscreen for ourselves we need to know our Skin type. Its important to know, what goes well and what ingredients do no go well. There are so many kinds of Sunscreens available in the market today that will fit your personal preference and its important to find a product you are most comfortable in . For very sensitive skin type i would don’t skip just stick to physical sunscreens with Zinc Oxide and also avoid products with alcohol, any sort of fragrance, parabens, phthalates, or preservatives.

I stick to a BROAD SPECTRUM (Protects from both UVA & UVB Rays) SPF of 30 every day at least 15 mintues prior to going out and reapply every 2-3 hours. By the way, don’t even bother with higher SPF’s like SPF 70 or 80, (unless i am at the beach i would use maximum spf 50) higher the SPF, higher the chemicals that equals – skin sensitivity.

Some Sunscreens that I am currently using –

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 PA+++ ($65.00 )
Dr. Murad has blended an advanced antiaging treatment, a skin smoothing primer, and an invisible SPF into a multi functional formula that blurs and protects while combating the signs of aging. Mushroom peptides diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles while a soft-focus complex smooths and blurs imperfections for the appearance of improved tone and texture. Lightweight with a matte-finish and a velvety texture, Invisiblur Perfecting Shield is ideal for preparing the perfect makeup canvas.

image

This is a unique primer, moisturizer, and sun protection into a single application. As you can see in the picture below this is a silky, gel-like primer-textured product has a very silicony feel as it goes on easily and provides broad spectrum protection. I don’t use this as THE only sunscreen on my face, this works better as a primer because applying a thin layer of this works fine, but adding too much makes my makeup slip away. It also works very well over makeup for touchups. Also contains a good mix of plant- and vitamin-based antioxidants. The only con of this Perfecting Shield is the hefty price tag.

Kate Somerville Daily Deflector Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 50+
This is a Sunscreen loaded with anti-aging ingredients, including peptides, antioxidants, and some soothing and repairing ingredients. Its a very lightweight liquidy lotion that is perfect for when I know i will be outdoors for a longer period of time or be at the beach.

It does have a slight white or maybe violet cast on application, so this needs to be worked well into the skin in thin layers where needed the most.

Dr. Jart+ Every Sun Day UV Sun Fluid Broad Spectrum SPF 30
Out of all the Sunscreens this on is my favorite! It offers broad spectrum protection with skin care benefits (Has Cypress water and seaweed extract that purify the skin while soothing and moisturizing). The texture is wonderful for combination or slightly dry skin, with this sun fluid SPF you will be blown away by how smooth it is to blend in with no white cast & no sunscreeny smell. The milky gel formulation is moist without being sticky at all. This SPF is truly magical. I LOVE IT!

The Dr. Jart Sunscreen is perfect for underneath makeup, I feel it acts like a great primer and makes my skin looking healthy and moisturized while giving me protection. It is so light & gentle that it would also be great on sensitive skin. Best sunscreen I’ve ever used! I highly recommend!

Will Sunscreens meant for the body break me out if I use it on my Face?
The chances are highly likely that Sunscreens for the body will cause you to breakout. One time I forgot to pack my face sunscreen at the outdoor swimming pool on rather sunny day & I made the mistake of wearing the body spray on my face and guess what its totally clogged my pores and i ended up with a massave break out even on my forehead 🙁 So please don’t make that mistake!

I hope this blog post helped you in any way! I urge you to wear Sunscreen everyday, you body will thank you! Please leave a comment if you have any questions. Also i would love to know what your are using to protect yourself?

{Thanks for Reading XOXO}
