Makeup for beginners…Budget Friendly Starter Makeup Kit.

Hello everyone!! The other day I helped a friend put together a makeup startup kit, that included some wonderful budget friendly products that she happened to love and that worked well for her. That’s when I thought of writing a post about it sharing the products that will not break your wallet and actually work really well! Now, I have used some of the products for a really long time & totally love. The others I can swear by.

For someone who is new to makeup, or is just starting (and that could be at any age), makeup aisles can be quite intimidating, there are SO many products & brands to choose from, which can get overwhelming for folks. I remember, when I started….some products, I picked up on my own judgement and some, on the recommendations of others. During the course of time, I trusted my instincts by learning the basics and it got only better with time as well as the good and bad experiences with products. It’s never perfect and I don’t expect it to be but I am happy today because I know what works for me.

So here we go, some essential must haves for beginners or for anyone are…

First and most important – Great makeup begins with great skincare. Always prep your skin with a good moisturizer & primer. The duo will ensure a flawless base that keeps makeup looking good without breaking down. Even if you have oily skin you find a primer that will work best on your skin and do not skip this step.

Face & Eyeshadow Primers

L’Oréal Studio Secrets Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer (12.99)
Instantly gives life to dull skin, a little goes a long way. I dot dot apply Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer onto moisturized cheeks, center on my forehead, nose, cupids bow and chin, under my foundation. It gives my face a beautiful healthy lit from with in glow. Stays on all day!

Loreal Lumi

Wet n Wild Picture Perfect Eyeshadow Primer ($4.69)
This perfect primer preps and brightens eyelids to lock down eye shadow color! I have very oily eyelids and it is an absolute must for me to wear an eye primer for my shadow to stay on looking vibrant. This Primer works just as well as my favorite Nars pro prime, it does help my eye shadow stay on longer & vibrant.

Base / Foundation

L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation ($12.99)
The Pro-Matte Foundation has super coverage (medium-full) without being thick and cake-y. It is a very good foundation for oily skin girls. It has a beautiful natural finish and does not oxidize. If you have drier skin, then make sure your prep your skin well with a primer/moisturizer or else it will cling to dry patches. I use this on my t-zone in summers or just to spot conceal.

L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation ($12.99)
This is a newer foundation and i absolutely love it. It is perfect for drier skin and goes on smooth with a flawless dewy finish. I use a damp beauty blender to apply this and find myself reaching for it almost every day! It has a medium coverage. Wears beautifully, all day long and in fact comparable to many high-end brand foundations. I highly recommend it!

Pro Matte Pro Glow

If you are younger and your skin is great you don’t need a full coverage foundation at all, probably a BB Cream or tinted moisturizer or your foundation mixed with your moisturizer will enhance what you’ve got, keeping you look youthful & not made up.

Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin Concealer($8.99)
I use this as my under eye concealer and the consistence is so light that it blends like a dream! Also love that it has a wand applicator that is so easy to glide or dab on the product. Covers my under eye shadows very well and brightens. I use it everyday and it stays all day long. The best part it is, it never creases or settles into fine lines. Love it! I own a lot of other drugstore & high end mascaras, and this one is better than them all, by far the best mascara I’ve ever used! I Highly recommend it!

Maybelline Concealer

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer
This is another great drugstore concealer, lot of people have compared it to the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. What I like about this concealer is that is very creamy, lightweight & has a dewy finish. But I feel on me it is not very long lasting like the Nars concealer & I also need to layer it for more coverage. That being said i would not bash it completely, I feel for the price it is a great concealer that blends well and looks natural.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer
Super concentrated formula. Dries to powdery matte finish and covers like a pro. Does not crease and is very long lasting. If you drier under eyes make sure you use an emolient eye cream before using this concealer.

Rimmel London Stay Matte Pressed Powder
Being dry skin am not much of a powder girl but some days when i need to set I use this powder light handedly and it gets the job done well. I have it in the shade Creamy Natural which is a bit pinkier for my skin tone but I mainly use it as a setting powder for a light application. Stay Matte Powder comes in 8 shades. I love how this product makes my face look so smooth. My only grip is that the packaging is rather flimsy and cheap which is why the product tends to dry out quicker.

Rimmel Powder

L’oreal visible lift color lift blush (12.95)
This blush is absolutely a gem at the drugstore!!! It feels like moussey to the touch and glides & blends on the cheeks easily with a beautiful touch of radiance. There six shades available of the L’Oreal Visible Lift Colour Blush in- Berry Lift (swatched below), Coral Lift, Pink Lift, Rose Gold Lift, Peach Gold Lift & Nude Lift.

The blushes go on quite sheer, but can be layered for more color. For more intensity the blush works very well when applied with finger tips. And for a natural application I use my real techniques all purpose brush and dab and blend. It has a cream-to-powder finish that works for all skin types.

Milani Rose Powder blush tea rose ($7.99)
First let me start by saying how gorgeous is the rose pattern on the blush? And let me tell you that the blush holds the rose shape even after a lot of use!! While Tea Rose Rose Powder Blush is gorgeous in the compact, it is even prettier on cheeks. Its a soft rosy matte blush that is the perfect shade to give a subtle pink hue. These powder blushes from Milani are definitely “holy grail” products. Plus it is a sizable compact which will last forever!

e.l.f. Cosmetics Online Only Powder Blush Palette ($6.00)
I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up the Blush Palette from CVS for only $6 But after trying it I was pleasantly surprised! These are velvety smooth blushes that are so darn pigmented!! I recommend using a light hand when applying this blush. Its a nice mix of cool and warm tones.

It comes in two colored Palettes. Light & Dark. I own both the Palettes and love them both. Rosy, coral and bronzy you have it all in these Palettes.

Highlighter / Contour

Wet n Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder ($3.99)
They are silky smooth highlighters that are infused with shimmering pearl pigments to give your skin a naturally luminous glow. It was nearly impossible to get your hands on these Highlighters especially in Precious Petals, that a beautiful champagne color that almost rivals high end pricier highlighters. But am happy to announce that Wet n Wild is making these babies permanent in their collection in 2017 so it will be easily available at all the drugstores.

The Megaglo Highlighters come in two shades with a beautiful wild flower pattern (Lost in the Wild Flower Collection) embossed into the powder. The lighter of the two shades is called Precious Petals and other one is called Crown of my Canopy and is more of a rose gold color. The powder is finely milled and applies beautifully, you don’t need a lot as its so pigmented and will light up those cheekbones for sure!!

e.l.f. Cosmetics Contour Palette ($6.00)
Like all other ELF Products the Contour Palette is very inexpensive too. The powder is soft and has two light and two dark shades for contouring, shading, sculpting, brightening and highlighting the eyes, cheekbones, nose, and jawline to slim and enhance features. An absolute must have!
elf contour

The only con I would have is that, if you’re more darker skin I don’t think this product will work very well on you. I feel like this product suits more skin tones that are fair to medium. Elf Cosmetics should definitely come out with another palette suitable for darker skin tones.

L’Oréal Infallible Eyeshadow in Amber Rush ($7.99)
Amber Rush is a gorgeous rose gold pigment that will be beautiful on anyone. It has a super-metallic finish. I swipe the shadow with my finger and pat on the color as opposed to using a brush and the color payoff is gorgeous! You can wear this eyeshadow by itself and blend out the crease or even use it with other eyeshadows for a more dramatic look. This was the first infallible shadow i bought and this color started my love affair with the other L’oreal shadows, if there is one thing you need in your makeup kit, its Amber Rush for sure…

Loreal Amber rush
et n Wild Single eyeshadow in Brulee ($0.99)
Brulee is a matte nude cream single eyeshadow that can serve many purposes. You can use it as a brow bone highlight, a shadow base to even out the eyelids and I also use it as a powder to set my concealer with. I have so many of these lying around in my vanity, and will continue to buy it.

Physicians Formula Matte Collection Quad Eyeshadow in Classic Nudes ($7.99)
Classic Nudes is a very underrated shadow quad at the drug store but at the same time it is a great quality matte quad to own. I grab this on my more natural days. The shadows are creamy, blend well and quite pigmented. I feel this is a great quad to pair with shimmery shadows.

Classic Nudes

There is a gorgeous warm brown (top left) that is very pigmented and works great as a transition color. However, I’d say if you have oily lids wear a good primer or it will fade away in a couple of hours. Riteaid always has it on sale for buy and get one free on all PF products.

CoverGirl The Super Sizer Mascara ($6.99)
The Super Sizer Mascara gives me good volume and great length without being clumpy! I wipe most of the product off on the wand before using it. I place the wand right below my lashes and push down my lashes on it and kind of twirl the wand. This way I don’t get the ‘spider effect’ at all, I get full, long, separated lashes that I love. I’m very happy to find a Mascara that works well on my barely there lashes. The formula is rather wet can take some time to dry, but once it dries it will not flake or smudge all day long.

Eye Pencil

Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner in Nude, Turquoise, Brown Black ($4.49)
Claims: An ultra-smooth & creamy formula that glides on easily; waterproof, smudge-proof, sweat-proof, heat-proof, humidity-proof and scandal- proof Dermatologist & ophthalmologist tested. Safe for sensitive eyes.
Nude on the waterline and Black on the tightline is how I use it everyday. The liner pencil is creamy and pigmented. The darker colors do smudge a little at the corner of my eyes but that pretty much happens with any liner. The only con is that it is not a twist up liner and has to be sharpened often. Another must buy for EVERYONE!

Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner Black or Brown ($8.99)
Am not a big gel eyeliner person, but i do like a little wing occasionally and that’s when I use the Maybelline Gel eyeliner, with this liner I get precision & intense color. It goes on very smooth and is pigmented. The little pot of product has lasted me a really long time and it does not dry out that soon. It comes with a brush that is a bit too thick for application for my liking so I use either a Mac Liner brush or a Real Techniques finer liner brush to apply it.

Rimmel London Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner ($6.99)
Jordana Easyliner Retractable Pencil for Lips (2.19)
Nyx Cosmetics Slim Lip Pencil ($3.49)

There are some wonderful affordable lip liners available at the drugstore. Some that I get a lot of use from are from Rimmel, Jordana & Nyx. They are pigmented, creamy and line or fill in the lips perfectly.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color in Touch of Spice (7.99)
I am a huge fan of the Maybelline’s Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Colors & I have quite the collection. They are Matte go on very smooth without being dry and have very full coverage. Touch of Spice is one of my favorite colors out of this collection. Its a medium brown rosy plum color with slightly warmer undertones and a satin-matte finish. I can not get enough of this Lipstick!

WnW Lipstick in Dark Pink Frost 530D ($.0.99)
A beautiful Pink frost lipstick perfect to be used as a lip topper over any lipstick to add that gorgeous frosty shine. And for the price, a lipstick for 99 cents??? Even a bag of chips would cost more…so pick this up, its gorgeous and you have nothing to loose!!!

Wet n Wild Color Icon Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Peony Express ($2.99)
Peony Express is a very pretty metallic liquid lip color with a non-drying formula & wears for hours. I wear it over a lipstick and it make my lips look fuller. If you like shine you are going to love this! Its a beautiful Rosy Pink that can go on top any lipstick or can be used by itself.

Let me end the post saying, there is a lot of product you can buy, while a set of products might work for some individuals there are some that also may not.
